One in 30 potential online gun buyers in the United States have a criminal history that should prevent them from owning weapons, according to an alarming new study.

According to a first-of-its-kind study conducted by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, convicted felons, domestic abusers and other criminals were among those seeking guns on Armslist.com, a popular weapons website dubbed the “Craigslist for weapons.”
Investigators examined “want-to-buy” postings on the site, which was launched in 2009. The postings were made by people detailing exactly what type of gun they wanted.
The study found that unlike gun purchases at a registered gun dealership, online buyers are not subject to background checks, a loophole that’s being exploited every day by criminals.
Since the website sells about 790,000 weapons a year, that means as many as 25,000 guns could be sold annually to buyers with criminal records, the study said.
