A Phoenix man was sentenced to 66 ½ years in prison on Friday morning for his role in a New Year’s Eve 2013 shootout in east Phoenix that critically injured a Phoenix police officer and a Maricopa County sheriff’s posse member who tried to help.

Roger Allen Sharp, 27, had previously pleaded guilty to attempted murder and aggravated assault and other charges for his involvement in an armed robbery that escalated into an officer and bystander shooting on New Year’s Eve 2013.

Police said Sharp crashed into a pickup truck near 56th Street and Thomas Road at approximately 2 p.m. while fleeing a robbery he and David Lee Murray Jr., 36, orchestrated about a mile away.

After the vehicle collision, Phoenix police Officer Scott Sefrank gave commands to Sharp, who was driving the car, officials said. Sharp and the officer got into a struggle, then the driver of the pickup truck attempted to assist the officer, police said.

Sharp was able to gain control of the officer’s gun and proceeded to shoot both the officer and the driver, Philip Grigg, who police later learned is a member of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Posse

Both injured men were taken to the hospital in critical condition and later recovered, officials said.

Police said one of the suspects then hopped the fence of a nearby residence and hid in the backyard before being arrested by a SWAT team.

Sharp was initially booked on suspicion of two counts of attempted murder and one count each of armed robbery, burglary, unlawful flight and resisting arrest, police said in a press release. Murray was arrested on two counts of armed robbery, police said.

Two other men, Jason Beau Keep, 35, and William Herbert Mayes, 30, were charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery in connection with the case.

Sharp was the only defendant sentenced on Friday.
