He is just 7-years-old but a brave boy has been lauded for managing to find his way home in the early hours of the morning with a 4-month-old baby girl just after they had both been raped in Ceres, Western Cape.
A 32-year-old man was taken into custody and questioned for the crime on Saturday.
He is expected to appear in court soon.
Deputy police commissioner General Peter Jacobs said that the 7-year-old was brave because he managed to find his way back home, with the baby, and alerted his parents to what had happened, the Cape Argus.
Ceres locals told the newspaper they did not know the suspect.
“No one knows this guy. We have never seen him before,” resident Lilian Mentoor said.
Some of the baby’s clothes were found behind a row of wendy houses. It is alleged the man raped the boy and the baby in a vineyard behind the houses.
The children are not related, as has been previously reported.
The baby girl has had reconstructive surgery at Red Cross Children’s Hospital, while the boy had been released into his mother’s care. Witzenberg Mayor Jacques Klazen and his deputy, Karriem Adams, said the area was plagued by drug and alcohol abuse, Klazen said.
