Bill Maher hosted an abortion panel on Friday’s Real Time on HBO, and punctuated an abortion gag by noting he has never thought “life is particularly precious.”
Despite the fact that Maher has been praised by the right recently for coming out with various statements against wokeness and Joe Biden, the show featured the standard leftist outrage over the supposedly impending repeal of Roe v. Wade by the US Supreme Court.
Maher, who is half-Jewish, opened the segment by asking: “Is this going to be the galvanizing issue the left thinks it will?” This question really cuts to the heart of the framing that I’ve been giving of this SCOTUS leak: this is all designed to rile up the left and get them energized about the elections, because they really love abortion.
Maher ostensibly presented “both sides,” but the individual presenting the right side was an old woman, former sports reporter and host of The View Michele Tafoya.
Tafoya, who is a standard late-stage plastic surgery disaster, simply presented the center-left view that abortion is good, but that it is going to far to kill an infant that could exist outside of the womb. She gave an anecdote about someone who is a liberal who visited a maternity ward and saw premature infants born at 5 months and started thinking that babies who can live outside the womb shouldn’t be killed.
It is my personal and very strong view that any caveat put on abortion is just a standard slippery slope, which justifies all the other abortions. I feel very strongly that abortion should be 100% illegal in all cases, no matter what, and that anything else is just on the path to on-demand abortions.
After what we witnessed with censorship – going from “Andrew Anglin shouldn’t be allowed to joke about morbidly obese communist women dying” to “oh actually, we just banned the sitting President of the United States” – no one can claim that “the slippery slope is a logical fallacy.” We have definitive evidence that the slippery slope is as serious as a vaccine-induced heart attack in the context of our current cultural milieu.
Aside from being a slippery slope canard, the actual reality is that virtually no one even has these late term abortions. So when you talk about abortion, you’re basically always talking about abortions that happen shortly after the woman discovers she is pregnant.
Basically, this whole “late term” abortions discussion was only introduced as a way to normalize normal abortions. It allows people like Tafoya to say “well, I’m against these extreme abortions” – an argument that justifies over 90% of abortions.
I am against this thing of “oh what about rape and incest or threat to the mother” as well, which also came up on the Bill Maher show (like they do in every discussion about abortion). That is just another slippery slope scam. Rape probably can cause abortion, but it virtually never does. Here’s a 1998 international study that includes “rape and incest” in the 1.6% “other” category, with claims of physical health risk being at 1.1%:
And remember: this survey, just like any abortion justification, is based on the honor system. If you allow for rape exemption, then all women seeking an abortion will just claim they were raped, and there will be nothing you can do about it.
The reality is: even if Roe v. Wade is repealed, most red states – aside from maybe Texas and a few others – are going to include “rape exemption” in their laws, which no one will be able to audit due to existing medical privacy laws, which means de facto abortion on demand, i.e., nothing changes. Even allowing for “risk to the mother’s life” leads to this situation. Activist abortionist doctors (Jewish) will just tell anyone seeking an abortion that if they don’t have an abortion they’re going to commit suicide – and again, you can’t investigate that because of medical privacy. Furthermore, you can’t prove someone won’t commit suicide.
Point being: no, I don’t think that bringing on some woman who believes in first trimester Moloching of babies and all of these other exemptions is “giving both sides.”
Maher continually joked about an unborn baby not being human, laughing that if an unborn child is human than an expecting mother can use the carpool lane while driving to another state to have an abortion.
Maher claimed that abortion “didn’t used to be a partisan issue until it became an issue for the Christian right.” This isn’t really even true, or rather it is completely misrepresented. The truth is that you could say it wasn’t a “partisan issue” originally because both right and left opposed it. Feminists were traditionally very opposed to abortion, blaming it on men – and it was primarily feminist activists who got abortion banned in the early 20th century (before that, there just weren’t very many laws about anything, really).
In The Revolution, operated by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, an anonymous contributor signing “A” wrote in 1869 about the subject, arguing that instead of merely attempting to pass a law against abortion, the root cause must also be addressed. Simply passing an anti-abortion law would, the writer stated, “be only mowing off the top of the noxious weed, while the root remains. […] No matter what the motive, love of ease, or a desire to save from suffering the unborn innocent, the woman is awfully guilty who commits the deed. It will burden her conscience in life, it will burden her soul in death; But oh! thrice guilty is he who drove her to the desperation which impelled her to the crime.” To many feminists of this era, abortion was regarded as an undesirable necessity forced upon women by thoughtless men. Even the “free love” wing of the feminist movement refused to advocate abortion and treated the practice as an example of the hideous extremes to which modern marriage was driving women. Marital rape and the seduction of unmarried women were societal ills which feminists believed caused the need to abort, as men did not respect women’s right to abstinence.
Maher is right that the religious right didn’t get involved until Roe v. Wade, because the “religious right” as a partisan and reactionary body opposed to revolutionary social changes didn’t exist in the early 1900s. But it was a totally unfair and weaselly framing, as most people are probably not aware of the fact that abortion wasn’t outlawed in most states until 1909. Frankly, I’m not even really sure that Bill Maher does very much prep for his show, and he is definitely not well-read, so he might not even have meant to be weaselly here, but that is beside the point.
Tafoya noted in response to this that the invention of sonograms in the 1950s probably made people care more about the issue. This is actually true, as in this period doctors began to more actively oppose abortion on the grounds that it was a living child being murdered.
Maher then went dark mode, saying: “It really comes down to, ‘Do you like women, or do you like babies?’ I never thought life itself was particularly precious. I really don’t. I’m serious. I think life is for the living. Until you’re born you’re not living. We wouldn’t miss you if you’re not born.”
He added: “I get that’s not most people’s position.”
It is increasingly a more popular position. According to The Science, human beings are just meaningless blobs of cells created by nothing from dead matter, so there is no real argument as to why life should be important. Of course, life becomes very important to these people who say that life is not important when:
- It is a black person
- There is a virus
- It is a “Ukraine” person
It has not been explained why, if life is not precious, the lives of black people or Ukrainians matter, or why it matters if people in their 80s die from the flu. There is no consistency with these people.
Whether This Happens or Not
As I’ve said since this news broke: I am very skeptical about the claim that there is any chance Roe v. Wade will actually be overturned, and I am skeptical that even if it is overturned that anything will actually happen. These things take forever regardless, and I just don’t really have any faith that red states would actually go through with serious action. As stated above, as long as they leave these “exceptions,” they effectively have abortion on demand anyway, as any woman can claim rape or that she’s going to kill herself and no one is allowed to interrogate her.
That said, regardless of what happens with the law, abortion remains a sick and satanic evil, a form of Jewish-style child sacrifice.
Even if the anti-abortion position is hopeless, and even if this is designed as a distraction and a way to reinvigorate the left – we nonetheless have an obligation to support abortion bans. We should be realistic and not get sucked into a distraction, but we should also remain strong on the issue.
I am deeply sickened by claims from supposed right-wingers claiming that abortion is good because leftists and black people have more abortions. That is not only cynical, it is actually evil, and it is also nonsensical and basically wrong.
