A 15-year-old Michigan girl has been charged with stabbing her 12-year-old brother and plotting to kill the rest of her family to run away with her adult boyfriend.
Roksana Sikorski pleaded not guilty Thursday to seven felony charges, including assault and conspiracy to commit murder.
Prosecutors say the ninth-grader stabbed her younger brother, Lukas, in the throat with a knife and tried to stab her younger sister, Angelica, at about 2 a.m. on Oct. 17, according to WXYZ.
Her brother survived and was treated for multiple stab wounds at an area hospital. His screams caused Sikorski to flee with her 23-year-old boyfriend, Michael Rivera, who allegedly stood outside Sikorski’s Plymouth Township house to text her instructions during the attack.
They were found later at Rivera’s home and told police they planned to marry, according to NBC News.
Sikorski is being charged as an adult because of the nature of the crime, Wayne County Prosecuting Attorney Kym Worthy said.
The teen was released on a $1 million bond with the condition of having no contact with her two younger siblings.
Still, Sikorski’s parents are standing behind their daughter, who they say is mentally ill and under Rivera’s spell.
“I think she just thought this guy loved her and she wanted to do whatever he told her, and she was very vulnerable,” Laurene Sikorski. “I want to make sure she gets help.”
Rikorski suffers from reactive attachment disorder, attention deficit disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder, her lawyer said. The Sikorskis adopted her and her two biological siblings from a Polish orphanage 10 years ago. They were previously in an abusive and neglectful home.
Laurene and Jeff Sikorski said their daughter met Rivera on Facebook and ran away with him for a few days this summer, the Detroit Free Press reported.
Her parents have filed a statutory rape complaint against Rivera, who was arraigned on seven charges, including conspiracy to commit murder, Sunday. Prosecutors told NBC News the sex charges may be dismissed pending the results of their investigation.
Sikorski’s lawyer, Laurie Posner, said Rivera wanted to murder her family because of the rape charges.
Rivera is held on a $100,000 bond and is scheduled for a preliminary exam for Oct. 31, according to the Detroit News. Sikorski is due back in court the same day for a preliminary hearing.
