Alabama: Black Charged with Fatally Shooting His Coalburner at Their Home

A man is accused of fatally shooting his girlfriend in the tiny northeast Alabama town of Hollywood.

Anna Grogan Brown, a 45-year-old from Scottsboro, was declared dead at the scene on Jackson County Road 36 on Monday afternoon.

Her boyfriend, 37-year-old Eric Maurice Scott, refused to come out of the home when law enforcement arrived, said Rocky Harnen, the Jackson County sheriff’s chief deputy. Deputies sent tear gas into the home, Harnen said, and Scott still refused to come outside.

“Based on the belief that someone was shot inside the residence, Deputies and Officers made entry into the residence and took (Scott) into custody,” says a press release from the sheriff’s office.

Scott is held in the Jackson County jail without bail set on a murder charge. It’s unclear whether Scott has an attorney to speak on his behalf.

Scott was also charged with violating the requirements of community corrections. He was accepted into a pretrial diversion program last year after being charged with possession of a controlled substance. An attorney who represented Scott in that case declined to comment.
