New Mexico is definitely living up to its name these days.
Investigators are trying to figure out who was driving after two men were involved in a stolen car crash that killed a motorcyclist Tuesday afternoon in Northeast Albuquerque.
Police say David Madrigal, 31, was caught by a police dog after he ran into the surrounding neighborhood and the man who claimed to be the passenger, 32-year-old Martin Perez, was found with a gun on him.
The motorcyclist, 67-year-old John “Johnny” Peralta, died at the scene.

Madrigal was booked into jail Wednesday on charges of receiving and transferring a stolen motor vehicle. Perez, who was last reported to be in the hospital, had not been arrested or charged.

The crash sent Peralta’s motorcycle sliding 400 feet into the residential neighborhood and Peralta was pronounced dead at the scene. Perez was detained near the scene and officers found a gun in his waistband.
Madrigal, initially believed to be the driver, fled into the neighborhood on foot. Soon after, a police dog found Madrigal hiding in the yard of a home about a half-mile away and he was arrested.
Perez told police he was a passenger in the car, but “could not remember much” after the crash. Madrigal refused to speak with police.
Officers discovered that the car Perez and Madrigal were in was stolen and the license plate on it at the time belonged to a different vehicle.
