The pen is mightier than the sword because the pen writes words and words are the ultimate weapons.
Since humans use their vocal chords to pronounce these ultimate weapons that can harm, rape, and humiliate, it is only natural to forbid people from making certain sounds with their mouths.
Chancellor Angela Merkel railed against free speech in the German parliament, declaring that freedom of expression which offends “the dignity of other people” must be censored to secure a truly free society.
“We have freedom of expression,” the migrant crisis architect began dubiously, in a speech to the German federal parliament, or Bundestag, uploaded to social media by state broadcaster Deutsche Welle (DW).
“For all those who claim that they can no longer express their opinion, I say this to them: If you express a pronounced opinion, you must live with the fact that you will be contradicted. Expressing an opinion does not come at zero cost!” she warned ominously, to applause from the assembled politicians.
We have freedom of expression, but we don’t have the freedom to express ourselves fully without paying the price.
If that doesn’t make sense to you, then look at it this way: you are free to go out and murder someone, but that doesn’t mean that doing that isn’t illegal and that you won’t be put in jail for it.
Think of it as a special kind of “freedom.”
“But freedom of expression has its limits. Those limits begin where hatred is spread. They begin where the dignity of other people is violated!” she continued, gesticulating wildly.
“This house will and must oppose extreme speech. Otherwise our society will no longer be the free society that it was,” she concluded, somewhat contradictorily.
See? You are free to say whatever you want to say, but not really, because some things may hurt some people’s feelings, and one of our core values as the Human Race species is that we don’t hurt feelings.
People not feeling uncomfortable and not getting their feelings hurt is more important to us than people communicating and discussing ideas.
After all, why should slaves consumer units talk about stuff instead of buying stuff and paying to experience stuff?
Be a good citizen and don’t upset anyone.
Let the leaders do the thinking.
Leaders have your best interests in mind.
Leaders protect your feelings.
Leaders care about you.
Embrace your leaders.
