It was a slur which could have ruined your life in 1950s America.

But it may surprise many to know that as far as Birmingham City Council is concerned, the word ‘Commie’ is banned.

Anyone using it in an e-mail to Britain’s largest local authority will find their message blocked.

‘Commie’, of course, was the short and insulting version of Communist.

During the infamous witch hunts by Senator Joseph McCarthy in Cold War USA, being branded a ‘commie’ could lose someone their job, friends and leave them cut off from society.

But quite why ‘commie’ is barred by Birmingham City Council is baffling.

Because those wishing to abuse left-wing members of the city council could use other terms like ‘pinko’ , ‘red’, ‘Bolshevik’ or even ‘leftie’ and feel safe knowing the message should arrive in the victim’s inbox.

There are no restrictions on the term ‘fascist’ or even ‘Nazi’.

And there are loopholes in the computer system.

“Of course you can always do what anyone else with a filter does and insert a number, a few asterisks or spaces in a swear word to get it through,” a council official admitted last night.

‘Commie’ appears on a four-page list of swear words, rude words, vile racist, homophobic, anti-Semitic and sexist terms, offensive national stereotypes and assorted terms of abuse banned by the council’s e-mail filter.

The list of 130 words was issued to the Sunday Mercury under the Freedom of Information Act and most of it is not publishable in a family newspaper.
