Dallas police say a 45-year-old man tried to force teenagers, including an underage runaway, into a prostitution ring in a North Dallas hotel.
Robert Lee Cooper of Dallas has been charged with two counts of trafficking of a person. He was being held in Dallas County Jail in lieu of $200,000 bail late Friday.
Police said a 16-year-old girl called an 18-year-old woman Oct. 13 and asked if the woman wanted to stay with the girl and her boyfriend for a few days. The two knew each other from Child Protective Services facilities, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
Police said in the affidavit that Cooper and the girl picked up the woman in McKinney and took her to the Ramada Dallas North hotel in the 8100 block of the LBJ Freeway, near Coit Road. There, Cooper gave the woman money to rent two hotel rooms in her name, police said.
On Oct. 17, the three picked up another girl whom the 16-year-old had met at a Metro PCS store the day before, police said. The first 16-year-old then told the two others that they would become escorts, the woman told investigators. Cooper told the woman she owed him because he spent $500 for the hotel rooms, according to the affidavit.
Cooper took photos of the women and posted prostitution ads on a personals website, police said. A few people inquired about the ad, but the 18-year-old woman sent a text message to a friend early Oct. 18 to tell her that “she was being held against her will in a prostitution ring,” police said in the affidavit.
When officers arrived, Cooper jumped off a second-floor balcony and escaped, police said. The officers seized a camera and a laptop with a browser opened to the website.
Officers found Cooper last week and interviewed him. He told officers he hadn’t been at the hotel for about a year, but an automatic license plate reader recorded his car at the hotel two hours before officers arrived.
Cooper was on probation for residential burglary. He has previous convictions for aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon and other charges.
