A man convicted of killing his mother was sentenced to life in prison Thursday.
Marc Lewis, 23, was convicted of murder last month.
Police said Lewis killed his mother, Shermeise Church, in April 2011 at her home in Jackson. Detectives said Lewis shot Church, 38, through the door when she tried to put him out of the house they shared.
Church died of a single gunshot wound to the stomach, authorities said.
At the time of her death, Church was a student and on the Dean’s List at Mississippi College. Students and faculty held a candlelight vigil in her honor.
“By all accounts, Sharmeise Church was an extremely well-liked person — and a loving mother,” said Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith. “Her murder, at the hands of her own son, is one of those cases that haunt us long after the jury returns a verdict.”
