Photos of Richard Catalano show him holding a small dog and standing in front of a car. His family members described him as having a “heart of gold.”
Catalano, 26, was killed late Sunday night in an armed home invasion that also left his mother in critical condition.
“I saw a lady come out (of the house). She was covered in blood or what looked like blood,” said Juan Rios, a neighbor. “It was coming down her legs. She was screaming.”
Rios told NBC 10 Monday night that he heard a gunshot and saw the aftermath. Like many neighbors in this area, he said the situation was shocking.
“I don’t know what happened, but I know it’s a great neighborhood,” said Jerry Joly on Monday night. “I just feel so bad for the family that lost their child.”
Police have charged Dari Garcia, 24, of Providence, with murder, assault with a deadly weapon, burglary and other charges.
Police said Garcia was arraigned at Rhode Island Hospital, where he was recovering from a gunshot wound that police say appeared to be self-inflicted.
Police said they believe Catalano was targeted and that this is an isolated incident, but they have not said why they think he was targeted.
Catalano’s father, stepfather and stepmother told NBC 10 on Tuesday that they were in the process of making funeral arrangements for Catalano.
Richard Lopes, Catalano’s father, described his son as “a really good kid” with a “heart of gold.”
“When you have to bury your son, it’s very hard,” Lopes said.
Catalano’s stepfather told NBC 10 his wife, the victim’s mother, was shot in the face during the home invasion. He said she was in surgery Tuesday at Rhode Island Hospital, where she has been listed in critical but stable condition.
