A New Smyrna Beach man was convicted Thursday of sexual battery using force and burglary with assault or battery for beating and raping a woman who had hired him to mow her lawn, according to reports and the State Attorney’s Office. Willie James Henderson, 50, faces up to life in prison when he is sentenced by Circuit Judge Leah Case on Dec. 5.
Assistant State Attorney Michael Willard said the jury deliberated for about four hours before finding Henderson guilty, according to a press release. Willard along with Emmanuela Charles prosecuted Henderson.
The 42-year-old woman hired Henderson in April 2012, paying him $20 to mow her lawn. Several days later on April 27, 2012, the woman opened her door slightly after hearing a knock. Henderson pushed it open and punched her in the face. He sexually assaulted her after dragging her into the bedroom. Henderson beat and strangled the woman as she faded in and out of consciousness.
