Two months after being released from prison, a convicted sex offender is accused of plucking a woman from the street, sexually assaulting her in two locations and leaving her on the street in another part of the city.
Corey James Butts, 42, of Bowling Green, is scheduled to appear in Warren Circuit Court on Dec. 9 to be arraigned on two counts of first-degree rape and one count each of first-degree sodomy, kidnapping and second-degree assault.
Butts is in Warren County Regional Jail in lieu of a $500,000 cash bond. A Warren County grand jury indicted him last month.
He was arrested Oct. 2 following a Bowling Green Police Department investigation into a woman’s claims that she had been abducted and raped.
Officers met the woman Aug. 23 at Woodford Street, and she told police she had left her Parkside Court residence that day to walk to a friend’s house.
While walking near Arnold Street, a black male in a car approached her and asked for directions to North Lee Street. According to a criminal complaint filed by BGPD Detective Wade Hughes, the man asked the woman if she would get in the car and show him the way, but she declined.
“When she turned she was struck in the back of the head by the suspect with what she believed was his fist,” Hughes stated, adding that the man then forced the woman into his car and struck her under the right eye with a pistol.
The woman told police that the man, who she later identified as Butts when shown a photo lineup that included his picture, told her that she was going to have sex with him. When the woman said she had just had a baby, the man responded that he did not care and would kill her if she refused to have sex, the complaint stated.
The man parked the car in a driveway in the 1200 block of Shannon Way and sexually assaulted the woman in the vehicle, identified in court records as a 1994 Toyota Camry, the complaint stated.
The woman was then driven to an apartment in the 1400 block of North Sunrise Drive and forced into the apartment through the back door, where she heard the man order an unknown woman out of the residence, according to the complaint.
