Lt. Becky Westenberger was injured along with Sgt. Shane Kite when they asked the Black sow to turn her car stereo down.

One of two Cobb County deputies has been released from the hospital, and the other underwent surgery for her broken leg after both were run down by a woman outside the Cobb County jail Friday.
Sgt. Shane Kite was released Friday evening while doctors operated on his fellow officer, Lt. Becky Westenberger. Kite was treated for minor injuries. Westenberger was reported as doing well Saturday.

Both are veteran Cobb County law enforcement officers. They were injured in the parking lot of the jail when a woman got angry when she was told to turn down her music.

According to Col. Milton Beck, Candida Summerlin was asked on separate occasions to turn the music down and complied, but then turned it back up.
When Westenberger went back out to Summerlin’s car, things escalated.

“As Lt. Westenberger told her to please turn it down and was walking away from the vehicle, she took off and struck Lt. Westenberger,” Beck said.

Kite suffered minor bruising and cuts when he tried to help the lieutenant.

Candida Summerlin (Named after a vaginal yeast infection) was found guilty, but mentally ill by a jury.

The four-door sedan then fled the scene, jumping curbs and knocking down street signs. Beck said during her escape she broke the axle of the front tire and flattened her back tire. That is when she was taken into custody.

According to court records, Summerlin was arrested on Sunday for simple battery and obstruction of a law enforcement officer, both misdemeanors. She was released on bond the following day.

Westenberger is an avid marathon runner and planned to run in the Peachtree Road race.

Beck said they aren’t sure how serious her broken leg is.

“We are just praying it’s a broken leg, and we know it will require surgery,” Beck said.

Summerlin faces a slew of charges including two counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer, two counts obstruction of justice, destruction of government property and other charges.

She remains in the Cobb County jail without bond.
