The Grand Valley State University student who initially appeared to be the victim of a racist message is believed to be behind the incident, according to campus police.
On Feb. 17, negative messages were discovered on a white board on the door of a dorm in the Copeland Living Center. According to a GVSU spokesperson, a black student lives in that dorm room.
The word “die” and an image of stick figure labeled “black” being lynched were written and drawn on the board. “F*** Black History Month,” and “Black B****” were also written on the board.
Campus police and the university’s housing department began investigating the incident.
Friday, Grand Valley State University Police Department Chief Renee Freeman issued a statement, saying that the student who the white board belongs to is believed to be responsible for the messages in question.
Freeman also said that because the incident “had a disruptive impact” on the GVSU community, the dean of students will deal with the student, whose name was not released, for a student code violation.
