Lancaster police have arrested and charged a man in connection with a stabbing on Sunday in the city.
Elswart Richard Bodden 23, of Columbia, is now charged with attempted homicide. According to court documents, fingerprints on a pack of cigarettes found at the scene helped them identify Bodden.
Police say Bodden broke into the home on the 400 block of West Orange Street just after midnight, stabbed a 29-year-old Annika Horn in the neck, arms and other parts of her body. He then stole cash and a gun.
On Sunday night, police identified Bodden as the driver of a black Honda Civic that fled the scene. He was arrested Sunday night and charged with fleeing and eluding police.
Investigators say Bodden took off and hit an unmarked police car as he left the scene. Police chased him down Columbia Avenue, but called off the pursuit near Stone Mill Plaza because of safety concerns.
The victim remains in critical condition at a local hospital.
Lancaster County DA Craig Stedman told News 8 the crime is a vicious one.
“This is one of the most vicious crimes we’ve had in recent memory, it looks like it was a stranger assault [on] an individual in her apartment,” said Stedman. “She was viciously stabbed numerous times She’s fighting for her life now in Lancaster General. They’ve done an amazing job keeping her alive.”
Police issued the following statement Sunday night:
“On September 7, 2014, at approx. 0023 hrs., officers from the Lancaster City Bureau of Police were dispatched to 422 W. Orange Street for a report of a stabbing. The arriving officers encountered a black Honda Civic attempted to leave the scene. As the officers approached the vehicle, the vehicle drove off and struck an unmarked police cruiser. The vehicle then fled the scene at a high rate of speed, traveling west toward Columbia Ave. As some of the responding officers attempted to catch up to the fleeing vehicle, other officers entered the Orange Street address and found a female victim inside the apartment. The victim, who has been identified as a 29 year old Lancaster woman, sustained multiple stab wounds on several locations on her body. The victim was transported by EMS to an area hospital where she underwent surgery for her injuries. She is currently listed in critical condition.
Police officers attempted to catch up to the fleeing vehicle, which continued westbound on Columbia Ave. The pursuing officers had to call off the pursuit in the area of Stone Mill Plaza due to the situation becoming too dangerous for the public. The vehicle was last seen traveling west on Columbia Ave. Dispatchers notified the neighboring police jurisdictions to be on the look-out for the vehicle, but it has not yet been located. Investigators are searching for an unknown black male, last seen wearing a white T-shirt and black pants, who was seen operating the black Honda Civic, which may have possible damage to the front passenger side.
Investigators conducted witness interviews and processed the crime scene for evidence throughout the early morning hours and throughout for the day today.
