The name of the man accused of setting himself and a Cedar Hill police officer on fire has been released.
The suspect is identified as 27-year-old Terrance Dunn. He’s at Parkland Memorial Hospital right now with extensive burns and will ultimately be held on a $100,000 bond.
The officer who caught fire with him is also recovering. She faces surgery for her injuries.
Surveillance video captured the moment Officer Ann McSwain rolled on the ground in an attempt to smother flames after she caught fire at a Cedar Hill shopping center.
It happened after she attempted to talk to Dunn before he set himself on ablaze. Two other Cedar Hill officers also caught fire, but they suffered minor burns.
The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office has taken over the investigation.
From the back of a Metro PCS store in Cedar Hill, surveillance cameras showed smoke billowing from McSwain’s clothing as she rolled on the sidewalk.
The video also showed the moment Spencer Stroud ran up to assist the officer. He said he has replayed that same moment every time he closes his eyes.
“That’s all I saw was just me on top of her, beating her chest trying to get everything out,” he said.
He used his shirt to put out the flames. Stroud and a friend sat with McSwain until the paramedics arrived.
“I just want to tell her thank you for fighting,” he said. “Thank you for not giving up on yourself or on us and just letting RJ and I help you.”
They were outside a Cedar Hill strip mall near Highway 67 and Belt Line Road Wednesday when Dunn entered a Wingstop, lit himself on fire and then attacked McSwain and two other police officers.
The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office is investigating why, but hasn’t said much, though we spotted detectives at the store looking at the video Thursday afternoon.
By that time, the lunch rush started at Wingstop and life seemed to be returning to normal. But, Stroud said he’ll never forget the woman who’s life he helped save.
“I just want her to be okay,” he said. “I want her to know I did everything I could, everybody’s calling me a hero…I was just at the right place the right time, just doing what needed to be done.”
Officer McSwain remains at Parkland with burns on 10 to 15 percent of her body.
Dunn had previously been arrested. On Jun 14, a few weeks before the incident, Dunn was arrested for criminal trespassing and harassment with previous convictions, according to authorities.
