Jackie Warpoole Jr. was shot and killed along a busy stretch of westbound Interstate 24.

The White man had obviously stopped to give the Black a lift, but was repaid for his kindness by being shot in the back of the head by it.

From WSMV:

Six months after the brutal murder of a Smyrna man on the side of Interstate 24, an arrest has been made.

Rutherford County Sheriff’s detectives arrested 23-year-old Edgar Domonique “Dom” Covington on Tuesday, charging him with the crime.

Sheriff’s officials are not releasing many details about how the two met or what happened on that tragic day near the Almaville Road exit on Dec. 15, 2013.

However, Channel 4 News has obtained a copy of the arrest warrant.

Detectives got word that Covington shot and killed 47-year-old Jackie Warpoole Jr., according to the warrant.

Covington was a passenger in a vehicle and shot Warpoole from that vehicle, striking him in the head, according to the warrant.

Authorities would not say if this was a case of road rage.

“This was a random violent encounter, is how this whole thing happened,” said Rutherford County Sheriff Robert Arnold. “We can’t really discuss the facts of the case right now since it’s a pending case.”

Covington is charged with first-degree murder, unlawful possession of a weapon in the commission of a felony and reckless endangerment.

With Covington only being in his early 20s, the sheriff said what he’s accused of doing is unthinkable.

“It’s tragic because this person took someone else’s life and took his at the same time, being so young,” Arnold said.

Edgar Covington has been arrested in connection to the fatal shooting that happened on I-24 last year.

Warpoole’s family and his widow, Angela, attended a news conference at the sheriff’s office on Thursday announcing the arrest.

They were too emotional to talk to reporters.

“They would like to have their privacy while they deal with their grief,” Arnold said.

The family released this statement:

“The family of Jackie Warpoole would like to thank Detective (Jamin) Humphress, Detective (Steve) Craig, and the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office for their hard work and dedication. Because of their commitment and countless hours over the last six months, the person responsible for killing Jackie has been arrested.

The family is forever grateful and continues to pray that the proper justice will be served for Jackie. They would also like to thank their friends and family that have continued to support and pray for them during this tragedy. We ask that you please respect the family’s privacy at this time and direct any comments or questions to the Sheriff’s Office.”

The family was determined to help catch the killer, so they asked for tips using interstate billboards, offering a $15,000 reward.

The sheriff stopped short of saying if a tip lead to an arrest.

“I can say we got lots of tips from the different hotlines,” Arnold said.

Covington was taken into custody at his home in Nashville without incident.

Covington is being held without bond at the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center. His hearing has been set for Aug. 20.
