We keep being told that satanists do not actually exist, and that all satanists are really just edgy atheists.
And yet, actual satanists do exist and they occasionally get put in prison for their satanic rituals, which include animal torture and sacrifice, and child pornography.
Every courthouse sees its share of young men convicted of crimes who stand straight, square their shoulders and look the judge right in the eye.
Dave Larose-Guertin, who pleaded guilty last spring to torturing rodents, arson and possessing child pornography, is not one of them.
Larose-Guertin, who goes by Guertin on Facebook, has been in and out of the Gatineau courthouse more than a dozen times since his arrest in the late summer of 2018.
Each time he crept in nervously, shoulders hunched, and glanced over his shoulder to see who was in court — stark contrast to his Facebook photos that show him confident and jaunty, and holding a small white rat.
Now he has been sentenced to two years on five charges involving cruelty to animals, arson and child porn. Since he has been in jail for a year and four months already he will be due for release very soon.
His lawyer assured the court the 21-year-old from Buckingham has changed for the better since his arrest, and no longer enjoys winning the trust of small animals so that he can torture them and watch them bleed.
Larose-Guertin was caught because he set a fire in an abandoned farm building. Police brought a tracking dog that led them to another abandoned building nearby. That’s where they found a “ritual scene” — a pentagram symbol drawn in blood. (It turned out to be Larose-Guertin’s blood.)
At the centre of the symbol was a dead hamster, cut up. Court later heard Larose-Guertin was sacrificing the animal as a way of trying to contact a demon, and he had killed others as well.
Police started checking pet stores to see who was buying little rodents, and this led them to Larose-Guertin. The young man’s computer provided evidence for the child porn charges.
Police rescued one young rat, recently purchased — possibly the same one that Larose-Guertin shows on his Facebook page. He posted the rat’s photo one day before his arrest. The Facebook page lists his occupation as vampire hunter.
A neighbour also rescued a cat. Larose-Guertin had tied it up and left it to die and it was weak and dehydrated, but the SPCA returned it to good health.
It’s interesting that he’s described as cowardly and afraid at trial. That’s relevant.
These people believe they will get power from the devil, but all they get is fear.
It is rare that they are ever arrested. These sorts of things happen all the time, everywhere. And they are increasing. They typically get covered up, or framed as something different than what they are.
We don’t know how large the problem is. But we see stories about dismembered animals and homeless people beaten to death. This is really happening. And our system has no ability to deal with it.
