Putin has ordered troops taking part in drills on the Ukrainian border in Western Russia to return to base, Interfax and RIA-Novosti news agencies reported, attributing the information to Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov.
This appears to signal an attempt at deescalation, as briefly afterward Putin said he does not yet feel it is necessary to invade the Ukraine. At the same time, he made it clear that he reserves the right to do so if he feels that the safety of Russian citizens in the Ukraine are at risk.
He also said he is not planning to annex Crimea, even though he has effectively already done this.
Meanwhile, things are heating up in Crimea, where 6,000 Russian troops are reportedly stationed. Reports have come in of a confrontation between Russian and Ukrainian forces near the Belbek air base in Sevastapol.
Pro-Russian troops who had taken control of the air base fired warning shots into the air as around 300 Ukrainian soldiers, who previously manned the airfield, demanded their jobs back, the Associated Press and others reported. Video footage obtained by the BBC appeared to confirm the encounter.
A journalist for the Israeli newspaper Haaretz wrote separately on Twitter that “Crimeans are coming to [Belbek] base to try and evict the Ukrainian soldiers.”
The shots, reflecting the tense atmosphere that has taken hold in the Crimea, are the first ones fired in the standoff that has threatened to entangle the West and that is casting doubt on Ukraine’s future. There were no reports of injures and the incident appears to be an isolated one.
Putin spoke publicly this morning, firing back at Washington’s bizarre claim that the liberation of Crimea was illegal, stating that the revolution which overthrew the democratically elected government of the Ukraine was an “anti-constitutional coup and armed seizure of power.”
Putin’s remarks were his first public comments on the situation in Ukraine since its former President, Viktor Yanukovych, fled the capital, Kiev, February 22. The Russian leader accused the West of using Yanukovych’s decision in November to ditch a pact with the 28-nation European Union in favor of closer ties with Russia to encourage the months of protests that drove him from power.
“Of course people wanted change,” Putin said of the protests in Kiev’s Independence Square. “But [people] cannot impose illegal change …you need to use only constitutional means.”
Putin went on to say that Ukraine’s interim president, parliament speaker Oleksandr Turchynov, was “not legitimate. From the legal perspective it is Mr. Yanukovych who is president.” Yanukovych fled Kiev one day after reaching an agreement with leaders of the opposition that was brokered by the foreign ministers of France, Germany, and Poland. Earlier this week, Yanukovych was granted protection by Russia.
As part of the change of power in Ukraine, early elections have been scheduled to take place May 25, but Putin said that Russia would not recognize the results of those elections if they were held under what he called “such terror as we see now.”
Putin said that Yanukovych has no political future and claimed that the former Ukrainian leader would have been killed if Russia had not granted him protection.

Putin denied that the troops guarding Ukrainian military installations across Crimea were regular Russian troops, claiming that they were “local self-defense forces.” Many of the uniforms on those troops lack identifying insignia, but their vehicles and uniforms appear to be Russian. Putin shrugged the accusation off Tuesday, saying “The post-Soviet space is full of such uniforms.”
The Ape President of America could not be handling the situation any worse, as he continues to write checks that his black ass cannot cash, launching a seemingly endless barrage of meaningless threats.
“What cannot be done is for Russia, with impunity, to put its soldiers on the ground and violate basic principles around the world,” said Obama, before a meeting in the Oval Office on Monday with Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The U.S. could press for economic sanctions and visa bans against Russian executives with ties to the Kremlin, but analysts say such action is unlikely to change Putin’s behavior.
Another pressure point is revisiting a U.S. proposal to build a missile defense system in Poland and the Czech Republic. The project, intended to protect Europe from missile threat from Iran, is opposed by Moscow and was put on the back burner by Obama after he came into office and tried to reset frosty U.S-Russian relations.
“None of those (options) are, I think, sufficiently potent to get Putin out,” said Charles Kupchan, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. He added, “The ability of the United States acting in coordination with its allies … has limited reach, limited leverage in reversing what has happened in the last few days.”
Putin has said, point-blank, that if Obama sanctions Russia he will cancel the US Dollar as Russia’s reserve currency, which would do a lot more damage to the US than any of Obama’s threats would do to Russia.
The Unbelievable Shame of Being an American
Each time I read of the actions of the talking monkey who rules the United States, I feel sick and angry, but more than anything else, I feel deeply ashamed.
Russia has a nobleman ruling their nation, who cares deeply for his people, while we have a foreigner – an African bushman, no less – who is a total puppet of occupational Jewish forces and who appears to care genuinely for nothing at all save promoting anal sex between men.
Russia is a country which had to literally shut down its own government just twenty years ago because it didn’t work anymore, while we were the greatest of European nations. We cannot view economic or political factors as a cause of this inversion. The US has failed, and dropped into a state of unfathomable shame, where it has a monkey president who is the joke of the entire planet, because of the collapse of our social order. We have embraced decadence and depravity, and this internal rot has eaten out our national soul, and we have come to celebrate our own pathetic failure.
If the US will ever rise again, it will have to be through a social revolution, where we no longer celebrate primitive Negro people’s “equal rights,” mass abortion and anal sex with men as representing the pinnacle of civilization.
