Anyone who has ever spent some time in DC knows that it is a city of stark contrasts, of haves and have-nots.
Young, naive kids from the American hinterland flock to DC in droves year after year though. And it’s easy to see the appeal. Marble columns! Tall, official-looking buildings. Not at all like the strip malls of flyover America!
Compare and contrast:
Maybe you, personally, disagree with my assessment, but I think you can put yourself in the shoes of someone who might be impressed by the veneer of Washington, right?
Many striver types, but also naive do-gooder types are attracted to the faux grandeur of the city and hope to get into politics to like, change the world, man.
Usually, they end up being stuck as very poorly paid interns working on the hill, or for one of the numerous think tanks and NGOs and other policy-making institutions that surround DC. They make near minimum wage in one of the most expensive cities in the world. Barely making ends meet, they squeeze themselves into one of the few white-ish suburbs filled with other transplants like themselves that they can find OR they tough it out in the gentrifying slums of the actual city, surrounded by homos and gay niggers.
Ms. Cortez heard the plight of these poor kids and decided to intervene on their behalf.
Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) claimed on Twitter Tuesday night that she will pay her interns a minimum of $15 an hour.
“Time to walk the walk,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. “Very few members of Congress actually pay their interns. We will be one of them.”
Ocasio-Cortez’s message came after her chief of staff told a Washington Post reporter on Tuesday that Ocasio-Cortez will pay her interns a minimum of $15 an hour.
After meeting “several” Capitol Hill staff members working as restaurant waitstaff at a Washington, DC, restaurant, the self-described Democratic Socialist— who is jockeying for a seat on the House Financial Services Committee— sent out a tweet Monday saying it “is a disgrace” that congressional staffers do not make a “living wage”.
I can just imagine all the Boomers reading this and seething at the nerve of this beautiful young Millennial woman.
How dare these kids demand to be paid! Back in my day, we were paid in bootstraps and handshakes and we got along just fine!
Most of the Boomer politicians in DC (and frankly anywhere in America) think that occasionally tossing one of their interns a quarter, coupled with a firm pat on the back and a wink is enough to keep them happy.
And they wonder why everyone hates their guts…
But it is not only their penny-pinching greed that is to blame, folks. There is also a broken system at work here. With more and more students getting college degrees, the pool of applicants for any White Collar position is getting wider and deeper. Employers can now be even pickier, demanding grad school as a basic entry-level requirement for >45k a year starting analyst positions at think tanks, consulting companies, any job really that isn’t STEM-related.
And with such steep entry-level requirements, employers can just straight-up not pay their employees and say that they’re offering resume-building experience instead of wages.
Don’t worry about getting paid now, kiddo! You’ll get paid at the next job you take! Work hard now, get that experience, and paying employers won’t be able to turn you down!
Long story short, internships need to be outlawed and the minimum wage increased.
And the only thing that could make me like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez even more right now is if she proposed raising the minimum wage for kids in their twenties and paying for it by stripping the Boomers of their pensions and savings.
Because that’s where I’m at now with my politics.
I want what’s mine and I will vote for whoever will give it to me. Despite, or perhaps because Ms. Cortez is mocha-colored, she seems to inherently understand the gibs-me-dat mentality better than any White politician in DC right now.
The “bootstraps” bit and the “self-reliance” shit are philosophies thought-up after the fact. Once the preceding generation got fat off the milk and honey of the land, they decided to concoct these self-serving fantasy stories that justified austerity for the next generation, while simultaneously rationalizing why they should get to keep their ill-gotten gains.
Well no more.
I always knew that it would take a Brown Communist to cut through the huwhyte Lolberg bullshit and start loudly, unabashedly and shamelessly arguing for her own demographic’s self-interest above all others.
Thank God for Ms. Cortez.
Because this is the true nature of politics, folks! This is what mass democracy is all about! And it’s about time that we were reminded of that!
Me personally, I eagerly await the day that a White Millennial gets elected to political office and proudly and unabashedly proclaims that he will give free gibs to straight white millennial/zoomer men and pay for it by strip-mining the older generations, and other races of their wealth.
With Ms. Cortez taking the lead here, it is only a matter of time until other voting groups wake up from the spell and start demanding their place at the gibs trough.
If she can do it, why can’t we? t. every other voting demographic group
And that’s the kind of accelerationism I can get behind.
