Cyberpunk News: Apple Investing in Augmented Reality

In the near future, we’re going to have virtual reality overlaid on reality reality – augmented reality.

This is going to be dystopian AF, but whatever.

Observer:

Within the expanding realm of artwork that utilizes emerging technologies, there’s a lot of chatter about the possibilities of VR (virtual reality) and AR (augmented reality). The success of these two genres can essentially be boiled down to the importance of user experience: a VR or AR experience has to make the user feel simultaneously transported and absorbed, which requires a suspension of disbelief. Disbelief, invariably, is linked with criticism, and just imagine how tantalizing the notion of suspending criticism sounds to powerful tech companies.

Today, Apple announced that they would be offering a series of “AR experiences” that people can sign up for in their stores around the world, and that these experiences are the product of a collaboration with seven lauded contemporary artists. Additionally, the company said, there will be an AR art installation on view in every Apple store around the globe.

So here’s the thing: reality is becoming increasingly ugly to look at.

The urban sprawl and the realities of life in the West are going to get too depressing to look at for long.

Enter augmented reality.

They’re going to use it to cover all the cracks in the facade. Why bother fixing buildings and combatting litter and sprawl when people can put some glasses on and all of a sudden they’re gone? No need to invest money into physical improvements when you’ve got people willing to look the other way, just to make their days more bearable.

But then when you add body dysmorphia and trannies to the mix, things get downright weird.

People are going to be able to force you to see them as they want to be seen. After all, virtual reality is just your surroundings giving your user interface suggestions about what to show you. Other people with virtual reality goggles or (eventually) maybe even augmented eyeballs are going to be able to participate in that process.

That means fat girls projecting an image of a thin girl. Men projecting an image of a woman. Non-Whites projecting images of the Aryan Whites they wish to be and Whites projecting the image of Dalit browns because they hate their natural skin color.

And there won’t be an opt-out clause. People who don’t participate in the ameliorated reality will be punished first socially, then professionally, and then eventually, legally.

Because the big lie that augmented reality can enable requires most people to be actively participating in it as reciprocal partners. Only poor people, old people and the blind will be left untouched. We will literally all live in a dream world of illusions and no one will complain because the real world will be too stark and bleak to want to stay in for too long.

This is the future that awaits us, bros.

Best come to terms with it now.
