Dontae Morris will be put to death for the 2010 murders of two Tampa Police officers.

Morris showed no emotion as Judge William Fuente sentenced him Friday morning. Last year, a jury convicted him of murdering TPD Officers Dave Curtis and Jeff Kocab. The jury recommended the death penalty.

“Jeff and Dave, they died as heroes. They died protecting those who can’t protect themselves,” said TPD Deputy Chief Brian Dugan after the sentencing.

Kelly Curtis spoke on behalf of both officers’ families minutes after learning her late husband’s killer will be executed.

“We’ve been able to find closure on our own with the help of our faith. But it is very comforting to know that our justice system has worked today,” she said.

Curtis also thanked the community and the TPD family for its support throughout the years.

“Dave and Jeff died as heroes trying to protect this community and it is our hope that they are always remembers in that manner,” Curtis said.

TPD tweeted after the hearing:

“Although today we breathe a sigh of relief, our hearts still weep for Jeff and Dave. #GoneButNeverForgotten”

Mayor Bob Buckhorn released the statement below in response to the sentencing today of Dontae Morris:

“Our entire community was changed the day that Dontae Morris took the lives of our officers. Each step along the way has brought us to where we are today. It began with the manhunt and later the arrest of Morris, and in November, with one voice, the jury said that he will never have the opportunity to inflict evil on our community again. With today’s sentencing, there is justice and finally, closure.

“After it all, let’s choose to celebrate the lives of Dave and Jeff, and to be grateful for the years they shared with their families, their friends, and our community.”

Morris is currently serving a life sentence for an unrelated murder. He’s also awaiting trial on two other unrelated murder cases.

Morris will be transferred to the Florida State Prison. He’ll returned to the Hillsborough County Courthouse in December for a pre-trial hearing for one of his other cases.
