So the EU created a program ostensibly to stop people-smuggling and the entire thing is being used by people-smugglers to smuggle more people.
The European Union’s naval mission, launched in response to the migrant crisis, has failed, according to a UK House of Lords report. Critics say the search and rescue activity of operation ‘Sophia’ acts as a magnet to migrants and aids people traffickers. The chairman of the EU External Affairs Sub-Committee at the House of Lords admitted the failure of the mission.
It used to be that the people-smugglers had to present a vessel with a reasonable chance of getting across the sea. Now they know that “Operation Sophia” will save them if they’re sinking and bring them to Europe (even if they’re in North African waters). So there is no reason not to use any boat they can find, regardless of whether or not it is likely to sink.
If they really want to stop people-smuggling, they need to start turning the boats around. That’s all. The people won’t come if they know they can’t get in.
Very simple.
