The puppy that was raped was a pitbull-mix.

An Orangeburg County man has been accused of having sex with a puppy.

Freddie James, 79, made his first court appearance on Saturday after he was charged with buggery, the state’s law forbidding an individual from having sex with an animal.

Orangeburg County Magistrate Jacob Gillens set bond on the Vance man at $1,000 cash or surety.

On Friday, a woman reported a neighbor saw the suspect strike a dog in the head before committing a sex act with it, according to an Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office incident report.

That neighbor, in turn, called the woman. The neighbor gave a written statement to the Sheriff’s Office.

Human beings do not rape puppies. Creatures like this do.

The brown pit bull-mixed puppy was found “scared, shaking” while trying to hide underneath a car, the report said.

The dog’s owner said the puppy would be taken to a veterinarian. Its actions of hiding and shaking were not normal, the owner said.

If James is found guilty of the felony, he could face up to five years in prison and a $500 fine.

Court records show James has never been charged with a crime in Orangeburg County.
