WCTV:

A man was found guilty for the 2017 death of a Lowndes County Sheriff’s deputy.

Robbie Register was convicted on five counts Wednesday stemming from the 2017 death of Deputy Michael ‘Chris’ Butler.

The charges include two counts of homicide by vehicle in the first degree, driving under the influence, improper turn at an intersection and failure to yield to emergency vehicles.

According to 2017 reports by the Georgia State Patrol, Register was driving a semi-truck that crossed the center line, hitting Deputy Butler.

During the trial, toxicology reports showed THC and cocaine metabolites were found in Register’s system at the time of the crash.

Butler’s family said having to relive the tragedy has been difficult, and the pain will never go away, but they’re very relieved and happy with the jury’s decision.

Almost immediately following the verdict, Register was taken back into custody. A sentencing date is set for May 8.
