German Crime Show has to be Re-Shot Because It Made Right-Wingers Look Like Heroes

Tatort [Crime Scene] is a long-running criminal detective series on German television. It’s regarded as a kind of national institution. Recently they had to re-shoot an episode that was ready for broadcast because “far-right” Pegida supporters were favourably portrayed in it.

Only a few days before the broadcast, MDR reworked the fourth Dresden Tatort episode “Eye to Eye”. Reason: right-wingers were represented as heroes in the crime series.

The dubious scene comes right at the start of the Tatort episode. Insurance victim Harald – played by actor Peter Schneider (42) – wants to take his own life and is rolling with his wheelchair down the steep Calberlastraße (12% gradient) in Dresden’s Loschwitz.

But five men rescue the man who is weary of life. They wear T-Shirts or patches with the Wirmer flag*, “Wir sind das Volk” [We are the people], “Deutsches Volk – Verkohlt! Geschrödert! Ausgemerkelt!” [German people – Charred! Schrodered! Merkeled! (with pun referencing former German chancellors] – an allusion to the anti-Islam Pegida movement.

The exciting Tatort scene ends as Böhlert’s wife comes and pushes her husband off screen with the words “Thank you for rescuing him!”

The daily newspaper “taz” criticised the fact that “Right-wing radicals get walk-on parts with MDR like children or old women” and are shown as “the good boys from next door”.

MDR reacted promptly to the taz criticism, and had the “Eye to Eye” episode reworked – the symbols were removed digitally.

The original version contained a scene where the wheelchair guy initially made sarcastic remarks about Pegida supporters. That, too, was removed.

*The Wirmer flag is used by some right-wing groups, said to represent the “secret Germany”.
