Well, it looks like they finally caught the guy who killed those 300,000 Jews with typhus during WWII. Finally we can close that chapter of our history.
A load off my chest.
A former guard at Auschwitz will head to trial on Tuesday in Lüneburg, Germany, where he’s charged with 300,000 counts of accessory to murder.
Oskar Gröning, 93, has spoken candidly about his experiences as a guard at the infamous prison camp, though he has insisted he never committed any crimes.
But on Tuesday, he will finally stand trial for the atrocities he says he only witnessed, the Associated Press reports. The trial will see testimony from more than 60 Holocaust survivors or their relatives, many of whom are making their first trip to Germany since World War II ended.
Known as the “accountant of Auschwitz,” Gröning is accused of working as a guard at the camp between May and June 1944, during which some 425,000 souls passed through the death camp’s doors, according to NBC News.
Prosecutors say he was responsible for handling the personal possessions of the camp’s hundreds of thousands of victims. “He helped the Nazi regime benefit economically,” the indictment reads, “and supported the systematic killings.”
Seriously though. Charging an old man with murdering 300,000 nameless people 70 years ago?
How can this be real life?
