A Wichita man has been sentenced to prison for his role in the theft of a wedding ring from a dying woman’s hand.

Forty-three-year-old Danielle Zimmerman was pulling into southeast Wichita Taco Bell drive-thru last December when she suffered a brain aneurism. While unconscious in her car, her purse, cell phone and wedding ring were stolen. She died the next day at an area hospital.

Police later arrested three suspects: Daquantrius Shaquill Johnson, Quanique Dontrell Thomas-Hameen and Keith Byron Hickels, Jr., all 19 years old. Each was charged with robbery, theft and aggravated burglary.

Some of the stolen items were recovered, but not her wedding ring.

Thomas-Hameen was later found guilty of misdemeanor theft and obstructing apprehension in a felony offense. Thomas-Hameen was inside while his friends Johnson and Hickels allegedly stole the items. He then drove them from the scene.

In court Thursday, Thomas-Hameen apologized to the Zimmerman family, saying he takes responsibility for not speaking up when he had the chance.

Danielle’s husband, Kris Zimmerman, followed up by asking the judge to give him the maximum punishment for the crime.

“While he may not have been directly involved in the crime, he benefited from the results. He also showed he was a coward for not standing up to help,” Zimmerman said. “You never know if she would be here today if you would have just stopped.”

Thomas-Hameen was sentenced to over three years in prison.

Johnson and Hickels are set to go on trial in December.
