Shavelle Oscar Chavez-Nelson moved to Minnesota from Ethiopia in 1993.

The judge then sentenced Chavez-Nelson to life in prison without parole.

Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom said in a press release that he was pleased the case was brought to justice, calling the case a senseless and violent crime.

Chavez-Nelson is also accused of killing University of Minnesota student Anarae Schunk, who left the bar with him that night. She was found fatally stabbed eight days later. The trial for her death will take place at a later date.
