A Harvard librarian attending a conference in the Denver area is facing multiple charges after sheriff’s investigators say he tried to meet someone whom he believed to be an underage teen for sex.
Authorities said an undercover investigator with the Gilpin County Sheriff’s Office posing as a teenager on a social networking site was contacted by Yahya Hussein Ahmad Melhem, 47.
According to the arrest affidavit, Melhem said that he was a 39-year-old librarian from Massachusetts, and that he was in town for a conference.
Investigators said Melhem’s conversation with the investigator became sexually graphic, and he made arrangements to meet her the next day.
Sheriff’s deputies contacted Melhem when he arrived to meet the underage teen, and arrested him on multiple charges including criminal attempt sexual exploitation of a child, internet sexual exploitation of a child and criminal attempt sexual assault on a child.
According to the affidavit, Melhem is employed as a librarian for Islamic Law at the Harvard Law School in Cambridge. He was in Denver attending the Middle Eastern Islamic Librarian conference.
Melhem’s bond was set at $10,000 cash. He posted bond on Nov. 23 and is expected back in court on Nov. 30.
