Rick Shaw was shot and killed by Black home invaders just one week after his wife had died from cancer.

St. Petersburg police have charged a 32-year-old man with a 2012 murder.

Police said Christopher E. Roberson, 1649 27th Ave. S., St. Petersburg, killed Richard Shaw during a Meadowlawn home invasion. He is the third man charged in the two-year-old case, police said. A fourth man remains at large.

Shaw was shot after intruders demanded money and drugs at his home in the 7000 block of Orpine Drive, police said. Other suspects have previously been charged with murder in the same case.

Roberson was charged with first-degree murder on a warrant. He was arrested at his home Friday afternoon without incident.

Although he had been a suspect for some time, police said new information recently came to light and that led to the arrest. Police would not say what the new information was.

Two other men already are in custody.

Justin Maurice Hart, 24, and Charles C. Stone, 30, were arrested and charged in the months after the slaying.

Christopher Roberson has been charged with the murder.

Police were called to Shaw’s home shortly before 5 a.m. on June 19, 2012, and found Shaw mortally wounded, shot during a home-invasion robbery.

Images of the four intruders were captured on a home surveillance camera. They forced their way into the home yelling, “Police, police, police,” and then shot Shaw when he came out from his bedroom to confront them, police said.

Shaw was taken to Northside Hospital where he was pronounced dead from a single gunshot wound to the upper body. Shaw’s teenage son was home at time, but was not injured.

Earlier that morning a similar home invasion took place at 5800 First Ave. N. The victims in that case, a man and his wife, told officers they were asleep in bed when several armed suspects forced entry into their home, yelling “Police, police, police.”

No arrests have been made in that case.

Jail records show Roberson has been arrested more than two dozen times since 2005, mostly on driving and drug charges.
