India on Friday banned the export of personal protection equipment such as masks and clothing amid a global coronavirus outbreak.
It did not give a reason for the ban but it reported its first case of the new coronavirus on Thursday, a woman in Kerala who was a student of Wuhan University in China.
The central Chinese city of Wuhan is the epicentre of the outbreak, and the virus has since spread to more than 9,800 people globally and killed 213 people in China.
A store in Beijing was fined last week for hiking the prices on masks.
A drugstore in the Chinese capital will be fined 3 million yuan ($434,530) for hiking the price of masks by almost six times the online rate amid a spreading virus outbreak, the Beijing municipal market regulator said on Wednesday.
The coronavirus outbreak, which started in the central city of Wuhan late last year, has killed 132 people, with nearly 6,000 infected in China.
An administrative penalty notice has been issued to the Beijing Jimin Kangtai Pharmacy for sharply raising the price of N95 masks, the regulator said in a statement on its website.
The store raised the price of a box of 3M brand masks to 850 yuan while the online price was just 143 yuan, state television said.
Reports of drug stores hiking the prices of masks have been coming in across Asia. A friend in Bangkok told me they were charging $1 each for them, which is about 5 times the actual cost.
Asians have been wearing these masks forever. I remember being shocked in the 2000s when I first witnessed it.
Asians are an ultra-neurotic race of people, you see. Much more so than white people, in fact.
With this Coronavirus being on TV all the time, all of Asia has no doubt gone crazy with these masks, being more vigilant than ever.
Basically, every time a new disease happens, the percentage of Asians wearing masks increases.
I think this practice is going to spread to white people soon enough.
The wages of globalism is wearing face masks all the time.
I guess the best we can hope for is that these masks are cute.
American women would definitely look better with their fat faces covered. However, many American women would probably rather get a deadly virus than have their ability to shove cheeseburgers and black cocks into their mouths restricted.
