Officials have in custody a man in connection with the case of a missing teen and toddler found safe in Elyria.
Demetrius Richardson Jr., 25, appeared in Elyria Municipal Court Monday morning on rape charges.
Prosecutors say he confessed to police that he “engaged in sexual conduct” with 12-year-old Autumn Shreve.
The judge set a $500,000 bond. His next court date has not been set as of this time.
It remains unclear if charges will be filed in Avon, but Avon police say they are continuing to investigate and will have an update later Monday afternoon.
Two girls, 12-year-old Autumn Shreve and 2-year-old Sophia Rogers, were missing for about 24 hours. Just after 9 p.m. Sunday, Avon Police said that the missing teen and toddler had been found safe in Elyria.
Police say a caller in Elyria spotted the two and called Elyria Police who, in turn, called Avon Police.
According to Elyria police, Richardson met Autumn on an online dating site. Richardson told police that she claimed to be a 20-year-old woman.
He picked up Autumn and Sophia at their house in Avon and brought them back to his place at Carriage House Apartments in Elyria.
That’s where police say Autumn and Sophia spent the night. The next day, Richardson said they had left the apartment later that afternoon.
Detectives located them on Columbus Street and Gulf Road in Elyria.
“The longest was like a week,” said Sierra Shreve, Autumn’s older sister, who says she’s run away from home at least 5 times before.
“She’s known to run away and stuff but never with the baby.”
Police say that Autumn used to babysit her 2-year-old niece Sophia and that she may be trying to pass off the 2-year-old as her own daughter.
Police say Autumn has been chatting with older men on dating websites for more than a year and that she had a failed attempt to meet up with a man Saturday.
“I think she’s too young to be on any of that stuff and it needs to stop,” said Shreve.
