Iran seems to want this war as much as Israel wants it. That should probably make the US hesitate a bit.
The US hasn’t had great intelligence in a long time. (Well, they haven’t had great foreign intelligence – they have a lot of intelligence on their own population.) If I saw Iran was making these provocative moves after so many years of playing it cool, I’d start to wonder if I’d fallen into a trap.
Probably, both Blinken and Sullivan see this. But Bibi does not, or doesn’t care. And Bibi is in control.
Iran seized a tanker with Iraqi crude destined for Turkey on Thursday in retaliation for the confiscation last year of the same vessel and its oil by the United States, Iranian state media reported, a move likely to stoke regional tensions.
The seizure of the Marshall Islands-flagged St Nikolas coincides with weeks of attacks by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi militias targeting Red Sea shipping routes.
“After the theft of Iranian oil by the United States last year, St Nikolas tanker was seized by Iran’s Navy this morning with a judicial order … it is en route to Iranian ports,” the semi-official Fars news agency reported, citing a statement by the Navy.
The St Nikolas, was seized by the United States last year in a sanctions enforcement operation when it sailed under a different name, Suez Rajan. Following the move, Iran warned the U.S. that it would “not go unanswered”.
Yeah, but they didn’t answer it then.
They answered it now, after a year of meetings with the Chinese and the Russians, and after the US exhausted its military stocks in an insane “all-in” on a border skirmish in the former USSR.
They did it after Israel committed itself to a mass child slaughter in Gaza.
They did it when they hold cards.
The St Nikolas was boarded by armed intruders as it sailed close to the Omani city of Sohar, according to British maritime security firm Ambrey, and its AIS tracking system was turned off as it headed in the direction of the Iranian port of Bandar-e-Jask.
The ship loaded 145,000 metric tonnes of oil in the Iraqi port of Basra and was heading to Aliaga in western Turkey via the Suez Canal, its operator Empire Navigation told Reuters, adding that it had lost contact with the vessel.

The Suez Rajan was carrying more than 980,000 barrels of Iranian crude oil last year when it was seized and the oil confiscated in the U.S. sanctions enforcement operation.
The American people are apparently on-board for total war. They don’t have any idea what that means, because they’ve been playing games in the third world for 80 years and calling that “war,” but they are fine with a big war, as far as I can tell.
I’m still skeptical it will actually happen. Everything right now says that Blinken and Sullivan are trying to calm Bibi down by any means possible.
However, there is likely going to be something in Yemen, and we’ll just have to wait and see how far that spreads.
