It’s very good news.
Perhaps… a bit too good.
He’s got a plea deal with the US, so he’s… going to a US territory for the deal.
Julian Assange was granted bail by the High Court in London and released from Belmarsh Prison on Monday following negotiations with US authorities over a plea deal, WikiLeaks has said.
In a statement posted on X, the official WikiLeaks account said Assange left the maximum security prison on Monday morning “after having spent 1901 days there”.

“Throughout the years of Julian’s imprisonment and persecution, an incredible movement has been formed. People from all walks of life from around the world who support not just Julian… but what Julian stands for: truth and justice.” – @Stella_Assange https://t.co/o6rEz3urdP

The statement continued: “He was granted bail by the High Court in London and was released at Stansted airport during the afternoon, where he boarded a plane and departed the UK.”

According to the Associated Press, court papers filed by the US Justice Department show Assange is scheduled to appear in federal court to plead guilty to an Espionage Act charge of conspiring to unlawfully obtain and disseminate classified national defence information.
It followed the publication of hundreds of thousands of leaked documents relating to the Afghanistan and Iraq wars.
He is expected to return to his home country of Australia after his plea and sentencing, scheduled for Wednesday morning local time in the Mariana Islands, a US commonwealth in the Western Pacific.
I sure as hell wouldn’t be showing up on a US territory if I were him.
Assuming they are not escorting him in handcuffs, I’d consider myself another Brick in the Wall, and Run Like Hell.
I’d be on the first plane to Moscow.
It’s possible that they will do the deal for the Bradley Manning documents.
But remember: they never charged him over the Podesta email dump, which could just as easily be called a “national security threat.”
I’d be very concerned that as soon as I signed the plea deal for the Manning documents charges, I’d get handcuffed and told I was being charged for the Podesta dump.
Frankly, I wouldn’t have taken the deal unless they let me sign it somewhere outside of US jurisdiction.
Maybe they’ll let him go. Maybe Biden wants to brag about this. There is definitely overlap between the “Free Palestine” and “Free Assange” people. So it’s certainly possible.
They’re sending him to Australia, where he’ll be under constant surveillance by those people and banned from doing journalism. It’s probably part of the plea deal that he’s not going to do anymore journalism. Though after years of torture, I guess he’s probably ready to take any deal they put in front of him.
If he’s really out, I sure am happy for him.
But I’m not sure it’s time for the party just yet.
