Last month, the last surviving Estonian to receive the Third Reich’s highest honor died, and was honored by the Estonian people.
Having passed on the 2 at 93, Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross recipient Harald Nugiseks was buried at the Estonian Soldiers Memorial Church in the city of Tori, in a ceremony attended by Brigadier General Meelis Kiili, commander of the Estonian Defense League, retired high-ranking military officers and local officials.
Nugiseks, desiring to defend his homeland from communism, volunteered for the Germany military in 1941 and went on to serve as a soldier in the 20th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (1st Estonian).
His unit surrendered in 1945, and the Soviets sent him to a labor camp in Siberia, where he remained until 1958.
In 1992 Nugiseks was made a Captain of the Estonian Army. In 2008, he was awarded with the Medal of Gratitude by Estonian people.
With the last of this great generation dying, it is nice to see that some of these brave men are receiving the honors they deserve.
When the Jews are finally defeated, all those who served in the war against them will have their honor restored, and in Germany, the people will no longer feel shame in displaying pictures of their grandfathers.
