Five Blacks forced their way into John Huddleston’s home and then killed him.

The last of five co-defendants responsible for a robbery that turned in a homicide was convicted Friday.

After a five-day trial, 24-year-old Melvin King was convicted of First Degree Felony Murder, Especially Aggravated Kidnapping, Attempted Especially Aggravated Robbery, Aggravated Burglary, Employing a Firearm During the Commission of a Dangerous Felony, Reckless Aggravated Assault, and Aggravated Animal Cruelty.

The Knox County District Attorney’s Office says King forced his way into a home on Valley View Drive in June 2014. The occupants were held at gunpoint while the King and his accomplices searched for cash and drugs. During the home invasion, investigators say King shot and killed John Huddleston. Sydney Smith was also shot, but survived.

Prosecutors tell Local 8 News King was overheard in the jail intake center bragging about how he planned the robbery and shot the victims.

Melvin King was convicted of a string of offences including Murder and Aggravated Animal Cruelty.

“A young man’s life was cut short because five individuals planned a robbery to steal a thousand dollars and a pound of marijuana,” says DA Charme Allen. “If you have so little regard for human life, you deserve to be locked up for as long as possible.”

A sentencing hearing is set for December 3.
