Paul Manafort on Friday resigned as Donald Trump’s campaign chairman, after the Republican presidential nominee earlier this week announced a new leadership structure for his campaign.
“This morning Paul Manafort offered, and I accepted, his resignation from the campaign. I am very appreciative for his great work in helping to get us where we are today, and in particular his work guiding us through the delegate and convention process. Paul is a true professional and I wish him the greatest success,” Trump said in a statement.
Trump’s campaign on Wednesday announced a shakeup, its second in as many months, with the addition of Breitbart executive Stephen Bannon as campaign CEO and the promotion of pollster Kellyanne Conway to campaign manager.
It was pretty clear Manafort was doing something wrong. All of these scandals were going on and he clearly wasn’t doing a great job keeping Trump on message, in the way that Lewandowski kept him on message during the primaries.
After the “shakeup” this week, Trump’s first speech with Bannon in charge was exactly what we need.
He did a teleprompter speech in North Carolina, where he ground his teeth and said was he needed to say for the woman vote: unspecified “regret” over unspecified hurt feelings.
It sucks. No one wanted to see it happen. But look. We live in a society where, for whatever reason, women are allowed to vote. So, it was necessary.
Our women are 22 points behind us.
And he didn’t apologize to anyone specifically or retract any specific statements, while still giving the women what they were begging for, which is a show of feelings and vulnerability.
I can guarantee the points with women are going to go up after that.
It makes me think though of these people who claim the nationalist movement should be catering a message to women. He is finally doing what he needs to do to cater to women, and it makes us all cringe, as the whole idea is a show of weakness. Of course, we know he isn’t weak, and we know why he said it.
But it really demonstrates the idiocy of creating a society where leaders – the people who are going to lead your military – have to convince women they’re capable of doing the job.
But it was Bannon who apparently talked him into doing this, so I salute him. This is basically all going to come down to White women votes. Obviously the minorities aren’t going to vote for him, and he already has virtually all White men.
