A city man was convicted of vehicular homicide stemming from a 2016 crash in New Bedford and received a 2 1/2-year sentence with 15 months to serve, court records say.
A jury in New Bedford District Court found Jose M. Vaz, 46, of 232 Conduit St. guilty of motor vehicle homicide by means of negligent operation Thursday in New Bedford District Court, after a two-day trial, according to court documents.
Judge Douglas J. Darnbrough gave Vaz a 2 1/2-year sentence with 15 months to serve, court records say. The balance of the sentence is suspended for three years or until Sept. 19, 2022.
Vaz also must perform 200 hours of community service and loses his driver’s license for 15 years, according to court records. He was ordered to remain alcohol-free with testing.
He was convicted in the Dec. 14, 2016, crash that killed John Leo Avery, a 52-year-old Acushnet man.

The head-on crash occurred about 10:50 p.m. Dec. 14, 2016, on Tarkiln Hill Road at Plympton Street in the city’s North End, court records say. Vaz was traveling west on Tarkiln Hill Road in a 2006 Acura and the victim was proceeding east on the same roadway in a 2014 Smart Coupe when they collided.
A witness heard a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed before hearing a crash, court records say. The witness identified Vaz as the driver of the speeding vehicle.
The victim was seriously injured in the crash and was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital, New Bedford, and then transported by medical helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital, Providence, Rhode Island, where he was pronounced dead about 1:45 a.m. Dec. 15, 2016.
