After all of this time, after their stupid Russia hoax has collapsed, CNN is finally catching up with the reality that they are better off attacking Trump for not doing what he said he was going to do instead of pretending he is doing what he said he was going to do.
The President went to California on Friday to stand in front of a shitty metal fence with a plaque on it that says it’s a wall.
Trump is clearly freaking out about the optics of the last few months – in particular, he seems to have realized how absolutely pathetic it looked to say he was going to shut down the border “next week” and then wait for next week and say he might shut it down “in a year.”
That had thus far been the low point of his presidency, but standing in front of this fence with the plaque saying it’s a wall sunk him into an even lower place.
Declaring “our country is full,” President Donald Trump on Friday insisted the U.S. immigration system was overburdened and illegal crossings must be stopped as he inspected a refurbished section of fencing at the Mexican border.
Trump, making a renewed push for border security as a central campaign issue for his 2020 re-election, participated in a briefing on immigration and border security in Calexico before viewing a 2-mile see-through steel-slat barrier that was a long-planned replacement for an older barrier — and not new wall.
“There is indeed an emergency on our southern border,” Trump said at the briefing, adding that there has been a sharp uptick in illegal crossings. “It’s a colossal surge and it’s overwhelming our immigration system, and we can’t let that happen. … We can’t take you anymore. We can’t take you. Our country is full.”
As Air Force One touched down in the state, California and 19 other states that are suing Trump over his emergency declaration to build a border wall requested a court order to stop money from being diverted to fund the project. But Trump, who ratcheted up his hard-line immigration rhetoric in recent weeks, declared that his move, which included vetoing a congressional vote, was necessary.
Here’s the full event.
Right now, we have the most illegal border crossings of any time in all of American history.
There were an estimated 100,000 crossers in March.
They keep saying “the highest since 2007” – but in 2007, it was all men from Mexico that you could just throw back over the border. These people coming across now are all from Central America, meaning you can’t deport them to Mexico, they are coming with kids, meaning you can’t even detain them, and none of them are ever going back.
The number of those going free into the country is at least 3 times that of 2007.
And Trump spent a week avoiding the issue and trying to talk about how he was going to do a massive and insane cut to medicare for some reason.
Now he’s got replacement fencing with a plaque saying it’s a wall and he’s acting again like he’s going to do something while he continues to do nothing.
Who’s idea was this, I wonder?
Trump could have ordered the border shut down. Even if the courts blocked it, which I assume they would, at least he would appear to be fighting for the people.
Which honestly, would be enough. If he was out there obviously doing all he could, and getting beat, I don’t think anyone would hold it against him.
But he isn’t even trying to do anything.
He is just flailing around, saying and doing things that do not make any sense, while we have the most ever people coming into this country.
It’s hard not to just laugh at this point.
It’s all very sad, but you can’t dwell on that.
It’s better to laugh.
UPDATE:
I’m happy to see that Breitbart isn’t going along with this horseshit and put the words “the wall” in quotes in their headline this morning.
It’s not a wall.
It’s a shitty metal fence.
Calling it a wall simply looks insane.
We were promised a concrete, Israel-style wall.
If this shit-tier fence is all Trump could get – and I am willing to believe that that is true – then when he went down there, he shouldn’t have said:
That’s the new wall. We’ve done a lot of it, and we’re doing a lot more.
Which is what he said.
He should have said:
This is a fence. It’s the best I could do right now, but we’re going to fight the Democrats and push for a real wall like they have in Israel.
Everyone – myself included – is satisfied when Trump fights and loses. Everyone understands that. And if he would have just kept fighting and never won anything, I and the rest of his base would have understood and continued to support him.
But that isn’t what is happening.
Putting a plaque that says “this is a wall” on a steel fence that is just a replacement of another steel fence and saying “this fence is a wall” is just pissing on our heads and telling us its raining.
