Medvedev plays the role of saying all the true things it would be inappropriate for Putin to say.
He does it perfectly.

Moscow should retaliate as hard as it can against the West for its indiscriminate sanctions that hurt regular people, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Saturday.
The sweeping restrictions imposed on Russia go beyond targeting just “the authorities and businesses,” he wrote on Telegram. “They are directed at the whole Russian population.”
“The rationale is clear: the more Russian citizens suffer, the better it is for the Western world,” Medvedev, who currently serves as the deputy chair of Russia’s Security Council, said.
“We just need to remember this and exact revenge everywhere we can. They are our enemies.”
Medvedev suggested that Moscow should punish its adversaries by “creating various difficulties in the economy, stirring up public discontent over the foolish policies of the authorities in the West, and promoting international decisions that undermine the interests of the Western world.”
Revenge is a special thing for me, as it is the basis of my entire existence.
My parents divorced, and it was very ugly. My childhood was an incredible nightmare, most of which I do not even remember. I was totally destroyed by it, and will always be a broken person with various clinical psychiatric disorders and substance abuse problems.
There is no fixing kids of a divorce/single mother. Trying to fix yourself after going through that as a child is like trying to use duct tape to fix a shattered wine glass.
Most of you are in the same situation. Maybe you don’t understand what it did to you. And it is, of course, not worth whining about. Nothing is worth whining about, actually. But sometimes things need to be explained.
I don’t want to whine. I just want revenge for what happened to me and my siblings, and so many other kids. Jews created feminism, they created boomerism, they legalized divorce, they destroyed the Church.
I’ve got dead friends. I knew bubbly 14-year-old girls who are now blown-out hookers. The idyllic suburban street I grew up on is a Somalian hell zone.
Jews are responsible. Jews are the problem.
I have black blood in my veins.
My entire being is devoted to revenge.
Desire for revenge is the most powerful motivation of all.
I hope that the Russian state will devote itself to revenge. Because their enemies are my enemies. I want a revenge machine to punish the people who did all of this, to all of us.
