Bavarian CSU leader and Interior Minister Horst Seehofer said he would rather resign from both of his posts than back down in his severe rift with Chancellor Angela Merkel over Germany’s migration policy, local media report.
Alright, so I’m no expert on German politics.
In a nutshell though, the East – which remained Communist for fifty years – is far more based than the West. Historically, the East has always been poorer because Germany’s West is filled with trade hubs along vital rivers and the East is mostly agrarian. From what I understand, the Germans in the East feel bitter about what happened after the collapse, some feel like the USSR abandoned them, and that they were then exploited by the West during reunification.
That, plus the fact that the Soviets didn’t pursue a policy of “de-Nazification” same as what happened in the West means that a lot of Nazis simply switched sides and became Stasi under Stalin.
These factors come together to make AfD – Alternative for Deutschland far more successful in the East. Because, again, the Easterners didn’t go through the same historical processes to make them soft and cucked as in the West.
And then in the south, you have Bavaria, which always saw itself as being different from the West of the country. They have their own party within a party of the CSU. This is Seehofer’s base.
I think that his offer to step down would mean that there would have to be new elections – and Merkel is afraid that AfD and other parties will make large gains, so she doesn’t want that.
Merkel’s party is aiming to reach a deal which would satisfy voters in the upcoming Bavarian state election in October, in an attempt to prevent the right-wing and anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD) party from making gains. The topic of immigration is a hot one in Bavaria, as the state is the main transit point into Germany for migrants.
Yeah, that’s what I figured.
Seehofer is playing a dangerous game.
