The 51-year-old was approached by two men who forced her to go with them to unknown location before raping her.
She was with her light-coloured Chihuahua, believed to have been killed during or after the incident, who was later found buried in a flower bed behind St Mary’s Church in Kemptown,Brighton.
The woman was approached by the men near the church on July 31 between 2.30am and 7am.
Her dog was wearing a pink collar and lead and may have been inside her coat, say police.
She also had two rings stolen from her which have not yet been recovered.
Police are asking for any information, describing the first suspect as black, over 6ft 3ins and stocky, while the second suspect is white, taller than his accomplice, and skinny, with untidy hair.
He was wearing a denim jacket at the time.
Sussex Police’s Detective Sergeant Chris Lane said: “We are appealing for anyone who saw the victim or suspects in the area.
“The victim, who is white, is visually distinctive as she was wearing a light coloured coat and red/white striped leggings with a ‘Where’s Wally’ motif.”
Several members of the public, including a woman on a bicycle, may have tried to assist the victim after she was attacked and before another member of the public found her near the church at 9am.
