The mother of a man accused of killing a beloved North Carolina teacher faces charges after she allegedly attacked a news crew.
WSOC-TV reported that Darlene Odom faces three misdemeanor assault charges and has a court date set for Sept. 10.
Darlene Odom and her family stormed out of a courthouse Monday, seconds after a judge said her son could face life in prison or even the death penalty if convicted.
The mother was approached by WSOC-TV reporter Sarah Rosario and her photographer. She is accused of trying to knock the microphone out of the reporter’s hands and assaulting two photographers.
She shoved one photographer’s camera and then another, reportedly leaving a cut under one of the photographer’s eyes.
The incident was caught on video. The attack also reportedly involved a WBTV photographer.
Sharman Odom, 34, is facing murder charges in the death of 31-year-old Newton teacher and school counselor Maggie Daniels. His first court appearance was Monday.
Daniels was found dead inside her apartment on June 28. Police said she died from strangulation.
Police said they identified Odom as a suspect because of a selfie on his camera and a clump of missing hair.
Police said Monday that Odom and Daniels lived in the same apartment complex, but there was no evidence they knew each other.
