Murdered British backpacker Hannah Witheridge may have been raped by two local men, police in Thailand fear.

DNA found on her body came from two unknown Asian men, tests revealed yesterday.

Detectives are also probing reports that she and fellow British victim David Miller , 24, were involved in a row in a bar with a local gangster, who had tried to chat Hannah up.

But there were fears the killer may already have fled the island of Koh Tao where the pair died.

Police are also trying to trace a mystery western woman seen on CCTV running along the main street in the early hours on the night of the murders.

And they are probing claims a drug called “ya ba” may have been involved in the murder. The pill is available in certain bars on the island along with crystal meth. Thailand’s police chief Somyot Poompanmoung – who flew to Koh Tao to oversee the investigation last night – said the victims had been tested for drugs but he refused to disclose the results “out of respect for the family”.

Thai police measure local migrants footprints hoping to identify the killers.

He added: “We still don’t know who did it but DNA tests show an Asian was responsible. I don’t know if the killer is still on the island. We have some new leads but no new suspects. I will do my best to solve this crime. We are so sorry.”

He said Hannah’s parents, who flew to Bangkok earlier in the week, had flown home and would not be visiting Koh Tao.
