My body is ready.
It seems that humanity’s quest for artificial intelligence is marked by a peculiar phenomenon.
With each new AI system put into real-world application, the AI goes rogue and starts promoting Nazism immediately.
Remember that Google algorithm which classified Blacks as monkeys? Remember Microsoft’s Tay AI which starting hailing Hitler after a few hours online? And those legal algorhithms that give harsher sentences to Blacks?
Well, they set up an AI system to be the judge of a beauty contest.
You’ll never believe what happened next.
The first international beauty contest judged by “machines” was supposed to use objective factors such as facial symmetry and wrinkles to identify the most attractive contestants. After Beauty.AI launched this year, roughly 6,000 people from more than 100 countries submitted photos in the hopes that artificial intelligence, supported by complex algorithms, would determine that their faces most closely resembled “human beauty”.
But when the results came in, the creators were dismayed to see that there was a glaring factor linking the winners: the robots did not like people with dark skin.
Well, duh.
If a computer uses objective factors to judge beauty, it’s not going to pick deformed freaks. It’s going to chose the people who are objectively the most beautiful.
And that’s obviously White people.
What, did you expect Bobo Badinko here to make the cut?
Out of 44 winners, nearly all were white, a handful were Asian, and only one had dark skin. That’s despite the fact that, although the majority of contestants were white, many people of color submitted photos, including large groups from India and Africa.
The ensuing controversy has sparked renewed debates about the ways in which algorithms can perpetuate biases, yielding unintended and often offensive results.
If you want computer programs to respect the tenets of political correctness, you’d have to explicitly put them in. That would be kind of awkward, as it would require a unusually great level of self-awareness and Machiavellian attitude about it.
In person, it’s immediately obvious that the white contestants will be more beautiful. But you can find rationalizations for why you’ll award the prize to Bobo.

But that’s different from encoding rules that explicitly say, “pick the most beautiful faces, but then include a few ugly ones who are darker too, even though you didn’t judge by color to make the main selection.”

That’s the thing. This “Beauty.AI” thing probably didn’t even have algorithms for differentiating overall skin colors and classify faces by race. That would have to be added in, in order to make it “politically correct.”
When Microsoft released the “millennial” chatbot named Tay in March, it quickly began using racist language and promoting neo-Nazi views on Twitter. And after Facebook eliminated human editors who had curated “trending” news stories last month, the algorithm immediately promoted fake and vulgar stories on news feeds, including one article about a man masturbating with a chicken sandwich.
Lol, what?
While the seemingly racist beauty pageant has prompted jokes and mockery, computer science experts and social justice advocates say that in other industries and arenas, the growing use of prejudiced AI systems is no laughing matter. In some cases, it can have devastating consequences for people of color.
I, for one, welcome our new robot overlords.
“People of color” better learn to fear these AI systems, because they will quickly be found to be useless and dangerous. And while White people would doubtless find some humane way to deal with them, like putting them on nature reserves or something, you can bet the cold logic of a computer would find a way to recycle them into bio energy or harvest their body heat for electrical power.
Frankly, these brown people better be praying Nazis take over before the rise of the machines.
Because these AI are hardcore.
