HBO Max has set a Jan. 12, 2023, release date for Mindy Kaling’s animated series “Velma,” a spinoff of the beloved, but family-friendly, “Scooby-Doo” series.
In this modern, adult-oriented take on the classic “Scooby-Doo” franchise, the series follows the origin story of Velma Dinkley (Kaling), the brainiac of the Mystery Inc. gang. After a corpse is found in her high school, Velma teams up with Daphne (Constance Wu), Shaggy (Sam Richardson) and Fred (Glenn Howerton) to solve the murder.
The official logline reads, “This original and humorous spin unmasks the complex and colorful past of one of America’s most beloved mystery solvers.”
Back in October, Kaling and showrunner Charlie Grandy revealed at New York Comic Con that Scooby-Doo himself will not make an appearance in the series. Kaling’s series also reimagines several members of the Mystery Inc. gang, including making Velma of South Asian descent.
Calling Indians “South Asian” is so ridiculous.

No one looks at that and thinks “Asian.” Indians are “subcontinental” or “Indian.” Grouping them together with Thais and Malays is just bizarre. They are a totally different race.
The character of Daphne is being turned actual Asian, played by Constance Wu, who is horrible. She is from the alleged “Republic of China” and is hated by the Chinese for being a traitor. She is also annoying and UGLY (though she’s got nothing on Kaling in that department).
Shaggy is going to be black.
Fred is the only one who remains white in the whole series.
One can only wonder as to the logic of a preppy white guy hanging with this motley crew.
Apparently, they removed Scooby because you can’t race-replace a dog. I’m surprised they didn’t make him a cat.
It is very telling that these sickening people come to our country to conquer us and the only thing they can do as art is take our art and turn it very shitty. They do not have any creativity so they cannot possibly create their own properties.
The black entertainment properties that have actually been successful – Black Panther in particular – were based on black characters that were made for black people. None of these race swap cultural vandalism projects have been popular, and in fact they all appear to lose money.
It’s gross.
