UPDATE: A Gold Coast university student accused of a brutal bus driver bashing has claimed the driver started the fight.
Jean-Adelphe Lasm, 20, briefly appeared in Southport Magistrates Court today charged with the assault of a bus driver at Southport last week.
His lawyer Evan Cooper told the court his client had simply wanted change to put a deposit on a Go-card but was met with aggression from the driver.

“My instructions are the driver was the aggressor and that caused the altercation,” he said.
He said his client largely denied the police allegations about the bashing that shocked passengers and witnesses on Pohlman Street on Friday.
Mr Cooper argued for bail, saying his client, a sound engineer, could live with family in NSW.
“He is desirous of getting away from the Gold Coast,” he said.
But police opposed the application alleging Lafm was also due to face court tomorrow on an unrelated, older charge.
Magistrate Michael O’Driscoll reserved his decision on bail, demanding to see footage from the alleged incident.
The bail hearing will continue tomorrow.
EARLIER: THE man accused of viciously assaulted a senior bus driver in an unprovoked attack smirked as he was walked by police into Southport Watchhouse yesterday.
The 20-year-old handed himself in to Surfers Paradise Police Station earlier in the day and arrived at Southport Watchhouse about 5pm.
The Benowa resident was wanted by police after he allegedly dragged a bus driver out of a Surfside bus on Friday, punching him several times in the face and leaving him with minor facial injuries.
